Madrid, Spain’s central capital, is a fun, friendly, diverse, energising city packed full of things to do, both day and night. Furthermore, it is filled with great neighbourhoods, mouth-watering cuisine and a buzzing nightlife scene.

Route 2: Puerta del Sol → Plaza de Cibeles → Fuenta de Cibeles → Puerta de Alcalá → El Retiro Park


Puerta del Sol is the centre of Madrid’s most popular meeting point. It’s also one of the best known and busiest places in the city. Look for the ‘Kilometre 0’ plaque on the ground then take a photo with The Bear and the Strawberry Tree on the east side.


Gran Vía, located in the centre of Madrid, is one of the city’s most important shopping areas, with large movie theatres and many hotels.


Chueca (Madrid’s gay neighbourhood) is within a 10-minute walk from Gran Vía. Chueca is very lively with many street cafes, gay bars and boutique shops.


Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family. It is the largest functioning Royal Palace and the largest by floor area in Europe. Catedral de la Almudena is situated adjacent to the Royal Palace, in front of “Plaza de Armas” of the Palace, on the south side.


Plaza Mayor, a major public space in the heart of Madrid, is for the people of Madrid and tourists to shop, walk around, eat and enjoy the outdoors.


Mercado de San Miguel is the most popular gourmet tapas market among tourists. It is located in the centre of Madrid, within walking distance from Plaza Mayor.


Plaza de Cibeles, a square with a neo-classical complex of marble sculptures with fountains that has become an iconic symbol for the city of Madrid.


In conclusion, there is no doubt that Madrid is one of the most tolerant, open and LGBT-friendly cities in the world. Of course, there are so many more wonderful things about Madrid. I strongly recommend you to visit Madrid as it has a lot of things to offer.
